Bowie Tops Bladensburg In 4A Matchup
The Bowie Bulldogs were eager to show their superiority in this matchup of top public school programs. Bowie started the game forcing Bladensburg into early turnovers and jumping out to a 9-1 lead. However, Bladensburg had a distinct size advantage that played out on the offensive boards. Junior Daniel Oladipo proved to be a force for the Mustangs consistently cleaning up errant shots. He mixed up his array of strong post moves and put backs with well timed mid range jumpers showing off his soft touch as well as size finishing with 15 points.
Bowie held control of the game due to their assortment of playmaking guards. Their Senior leader Quentin Drayton got off to a rough start but his fortunes changed late in the second quarter. With 3 seconds on the clock Senior guard Michael Akingblade got the rebound and passed it up to Drayton. Drayton took one dribble and pulled up from 27 feet swishing the shot. He walked off as if he had just hit a lay-up, and he was far from done. In the second half Drayton and Oladipo battled back and forth responsible for the first 6 points of the half. Drayton scored 15 points in the second half to finish with 21.
In the end it was the Senior guards that made the difference for the Bulldogs. Akingblade and Senior Justin Robinson delivered timely plays whenever the Mustangs tried to make a run. On the Mustang side Junior Sherwyn Devonish provided heady ballhanding, and above average finishing skills to compliment Oladipo. Yet, the Bulldogs finished them off 61-51 in a game they never trailed.
